What is a "Bio-Blitz"? A Bio-Blitz is an event in which the participants work to identify as many different species of organisms within a given location and/or time period.
Why do a Bio-Blitz? An event of this nature has several benefits for the scientific community, the general public, and even the natural community. Scientists develop a better understanding of the area's biodiversity and the interactions between the various components of the habitats. The public will appreciate the incredible diversity of living things with which they share their community. As a result of the comprehensive scientific data and increased public awareness, the natural habitats can be preserved for appropriate public use which will benfit the natural communities that rdepend of those habitats.
How will Bio-Blitz 2007 work? On June 15 - 16, scientists, field naturalists, and other willing participants will work for 24 straight hours to identify the fauna and flora found at Watchung Reservation. They will search for all types of animals including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, insects, and other invertebrates. They will also collect samples of various types of plants.
What types of animals can be found? A comprehensive checklist of Watchung Reservation's dragonflies, butterflies, fish, anphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals is being developed specifically for this event. This list includes the species that could likely be observed onsite in June.
Exactly where is this being done? Bio-Blitz 2007 will be held at Watchung Reservation in Union County, NJ. This is a terrific site for this event because the park consists of diverse habitats including ponds, meadows, forests, and wetlands. With this range of habitats, there should be lots of different wildlife for all to enjoy!
